Build sequence
- Confirm the property line, call 811 and check permit and HOA height rules.
- Set the end posts, stretch a line and mark the line posts at 8 ft centers.
- Dig 10 in × 30 in holes, add 6 in of gravel, set posts plumb and pour concrete, crowning the top.
- After curing, cut the post tops level and hang the rails at the bottom (6 in above grade), middle and top.
- Hang pickets with a string line along the bottom edge, about 2 in above grade.
- Wait for treated lumber to dry (often 1–3 months), then stain or seal.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 100 ft wood privacy fence cost in materials?
Roughly $1,300–$2,200 for a basic pressure-treated 6 ft fence, depending on lumber prices and picket grade. That's materials only.
How many bags of concrete for a 100 ft fence?
14 posts × 0.92 cu ft ≈ 12.9 cu ft, or 22 × 80 lb bags with 10 × 30 in holes and 6 in of gravel.
What length posts for a 6 ft fence?
8 ft posts with 24 in buried is standard. Use 10 ft posts where the frost line or wind exposure calls for deeper setting.
